When you really think about it, all this talk about the Big Fits in recent years had land somewhere. Eventually, the great fit (a great outfit) and the literally great fit (a great physical outfit) would combine.
That’s exactly what happened at the Grammy Awards on Sunday, where pop star Justin Bieber arrived wearing an absolutely massive gray Balenciaga suit. Accessories included: a pair of demonic HardCrocs from Balenciaga, which are designer Demna’s supernatural version of every man’s molded EVA foam sandal; a neon pink beanie; Morpheus-style sunglasses; and the white ribbed A-shirt he stripped down to during the show. On the red carpet, in order to hold hands with his model wife Hailey Bieber — who, in a simple Saint Laurent column, was dressed for a whole other dimension — Bieber had to roll up the jacket’s gigantic sleeves. Justin’s longtime stylist Karla Welch, mastermind of headline-grabbing cuts, dressed both Biebers last night.
Thanks to Welch, we got to witness Baggy Bieber’s evolution from his off-duty tracksuits and Yeezy moon boots to his inside-out Met Gala tuxedo, as his coveted casual wear finally cleared the floor for the high – drop evening wear. Balenciaga also played a major role in his move to Big Fit legitimacy. Bieber has become a face of the house since appearing in an advertising campaign last summer, preceding a number of appearances by big names like Kim Kardashian, Offset, Elliot Page and Lewis Hamilton, the latter two wearing the same HardCrocs. the red carpet at Balenciaga’s Spring 2022 presentation.
On that note: these Crocs are just the latest link in Demna’s long history with the foam sandal, whose grail-like whimpering arc may resemble that of the ill-fitting suit or a certain teen idol. Redemption, in all its forms, is greater than before.
