Editor’s Notes: Oakley continues to go beyond the realm of tacti-cool polarized sunglasses with the Coyote boot, its latest foray into footwear.
A sneaker-boot hybrid, the silhouette features a suede upper with inserts in Cordura, a lightweight fabric. The shoe is rendered in three fully tone-on-tone colourways – black, sand and cognac “Coyote” – as well as additional color combinations that incorporate pops of neon.
When it comes to function, the boot is hard-wearing with a grippy rubber outsole and integrated flaps that keep dirt and water out.
Known for its motorcycle eyewear, Oakley made a comeback a few years ago when luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton and Maison Margiela released their own versions of wrap-around sunglasses.
Next, the Kardashians – Kim and Kourtney, in particular – were spotted wearing styles adjacent to Oakley. With this, the brand has reached a new consumer, who is not necessarily a cyclist or a motocross racer.
Reflective and wrap-around lenses have continued to endure, in part thanks to the fashion revival of the Y2K style (anyone remember the many Oakley moments of Dennis Rodman? Or those?).
With the Coyote, Oakley is attacking the sneaker market, a sector in which the brand has not weighed in before.
The sneaker-boot isn’t necessarily state of the art, but it’s clean, wearable, and has a bit of an edge. In fact, it has a distinctly different feel to old Oakley sneakers, such as the Vans-style Step Camo E or the skateboard-style Canvas Flyer.
