The One Item These Four Aussie Style Gurus Can’t Do Without

“I don’t wear it all the time, but it’s become my go-to when I wear a v-neck shirt. It looks best when it’s on the skin, and I also like the cool feeling of metal – you have a real sense of its presence.

“It will always remind me of my mum, but it’s interesting how much people associate me with it now – from my kids to my friends to my team.”

Pippa Holt: “Like all mums, I am very busy. I find that wearing caftans helps me “juggle” on a daily basis.

“I started wearing kaftans while living in Houston. Nothing prepared me for the scorching heat of Texas; I fell in love with their ease and practicality. That was eight years ago, and I’ve been wearing them ever since.

“I have around 40 caftans – I wear the collection samples. Many favorites are from our very first collection six years ago. The colors and craftsmanship are exquisite; they never date.

“I wear them all year round. I live in Sydney so the weather is perfect. They keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. I like to style them in different ways. Bandanas, hats, belts, shoes , coats, shirts, handbags and scarves give them new life. The styling process also helps me create new designs – I love it.

“Like all mums, I am very busy. I find that wearing caftans helps me “juggle” on a daily basis. It’s so easy to put one on and walk through the door. They look great everywhere – the run to school, going to the beach with the kids, to the office, to lunch with girlfriends.

“I can’t choose a favourite; I probably have a top ten, but that’s a moving target. At the moment, I’m loving our new palm and neon collections. But that will change, I know.

“I’ve been wearing glasses since I was 13. I’m changing my style but at the moment, I love rather oversized glasses. I’ve been wearing my current style for about 12 months.

“When I put on a pair of glasses, I immediately feel a feeling of concentration; there is a new level of attention I can give to the task ahead. It’s a similar feeling to wearing a suit – you put it on, and it changes your state. I love how fashion can transform the way you feel.

“I sometimes wear contact lenses, but I prefer glasses. They make me feel very comfortable and I love how they add another layer to an outfit.

“Honestly, I have too many pairs to tell you! I have a collection of vintage eyewear and continue to buy pairs on my travels. Will I ever design mine? I thought about it.

“I like to wear colorful shirts that are pleasant on the skin. I like the tactile aspect of a good garment, to the point that you want to touch you… I find it sexy without being evocative.

“I found my signature shirts many years ago when former Shanghai Tang [boutique] was in Peter Street in Hong Kong. It is made of beautiful fabrics in bright colors and a Chinese collar. I feel with my work that I don’t really need to wear a costume as such, but I like to wear clothes that express my joy for the opulent. I don’t want to look like a real estate agent. A nice shirt says it all without overdoing it.

“I’m pretty impulsive – when I see something I know I’m going to like, I buy it. So I have too many to count.

“I don’t know if it’s a signature, but I constantly get compliments on having my own style. I was once chosen as one of the best dressed men in Australia by a popular magazine. And what was most flattering was that I hadn’t bought any big name brands or designer clothes. It was just me.
